Last year, Jan helped me out of a serious predicament. I had been renting a funky little house with a view of Lake Travis, perfect for my daughter and me. But my landlord's restaurant failed, and he couldn't make the house payments. He offered to let me buy it for what he owed, so I went to my bank. Despite the low asking price and my 680 credit score, they wouldn't give me a mortgage.
